Title: CURRENT LIMITATION OF A VOLTAGE-CONTROLLED VOLTAGE REGULATOR

Keywords: Current limiting, DSTATCOM, Nonlinear Virtual Resistance, Power quality, Voltage Regulation

Abstract
Voltage-controlled static compensators operating in distribution networks grid are susceptible to transients (sag, swell, surge, interruption and short circuit), so they would process high peak currents, which may lead to their shutdown, or even render them inoperative. This paper presents a new concept of Nonlinear Virtual Resistance applied to a voltage controlled DSTATCOM (Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator). The technique limits the converter output power by limiting the converter current. In normal operating condition the technique does not change the dynamic response of the voltage loop. The proposed concept allows the DSTATCOM to remain operative during disturbances of the grid, protecting the converter and the loads near to the point of common coupling. The work is concluded with the implementation of the technique in a 10 kVA prototype. The experimental results obtained demonstrate the good functioning of the current limiter under disturbed conditions.
