Title: Single-Phase Voltage-Doubler High-Power-Factor Cuk Rectifier Operating In Discontinuous Conduction Mode

Keywords: Discontinuous Conduction Mode, Power Factor Correction

Abstract
This paper presents the static analysis, dynamic analysis and experimental validation of a single-phase Cuk rectifier with voltage doubler concept operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The proposed topology integrates two conventional Cuk rectifiers through a single-pole triple-throw switch, which doubles the output voltage or reduces voltage stresses in relation to conventional topology. The structure increases the voltage gain, maintaining the main characteristics of Cuk rectifiers as step-down/step-up operation. In addition, part of the power components is activated only in the half cycle of the power grid, which it also reduces current stresses in semiconductors. These features allow increasing the range of power and voltage levels processed by the Cuk converter. The proposed topology was analyzed in DCM, in which the high power factor is naturally obtained without the need for a current control loop. In order to corroborate the theoretical analysis developed, a prototype was built with 1 kW rated power, 220 V rms input voltage, 400 V output voltage and 50 kHz switching frequency. The paper presents experimental results with output voltage closed loop-controlled, and at nominal power the voltage doubler Cuk rectifier reached an efficiency of 94.68% and a 1.86% THD input current.
